Kanye West reportedly cuts ties with Jay Z's Tidal music service
Kanye West has reportedly left Jay Z's Tidal music streaming service.
The
'Stronger' rapper is said to be severing all ties with the music
service over claimed unpaid entitlements he expects to have got from
Tidal, reportedly being in the sum of $3million, including bonuses for
attracting paying subscribers to Tidal upon release of his "Life Of
Pablo" album .
West was one of the pioneer artists to buy into Tidal's mission and give companies like Apple and Spotify a competition.
A
part of Tidal's strategy has been to tie up artists to exclusive
releases of their projects on the music platform. Asides Kanye West's
Life Of Pablo (which was however later released on Apple which got him
lawsuits from fans for tricking them to sign on to Tidal), Rihanna's
"Anti" as well as Jay Z's new "4:44" album have been made exclusive on
the service.
Tidal has in turn released a
statement claiming that Kanye hasn't delivered the videos he is
expected to be out with based on contract signed.
This fall out has led to lawyers representing both sides sending letters, with threat to sue, according to a TMZ report.
Tidal
has had its fair share of criticisms from fellow industry artists and
fans for its exclusivity model, management reshuffles among other
issues.
Jay-Z relaunched Tidal in 2015
with a roster of other A-list artists as an artist-backed alternative to
Pandora or Spotify. Tidal claims to pay more royalties and was set up
as a co-ownership with Jay-Z's artist friends like Madonna and
Coldplay's Chris Martin
